About

Suzanne Dietrich

Hello!

I’ve cared passionately about how people feed themselves for a long time. Growing up in the country we always had a vegetable garden, cattle in the pasture, a fruit cellar of home-canned goods and we enjoyed homemade desserts for dinner most nights!  Since 2009, I’ve enjoyed working as a Registered Dietitian with people from all walks of life. While working with people in recovery with eating disorders at a residential program during my internship my eyes were opened to new ways of looking at eating, and that food was about much more than nutrients. A wonderful and wise Eating Disorder Dietitian introduced me to the fascinating approach called Intuitive Eating and the Health At Every Size® movement.

Suzanne Dietrich - Dietitian Gut Instincts Nutrition Counselling

As I began my new nutrition career in doctor's offices, I personally struggled to put limits on what people were putting in their mouths and food police their food choices to assist them with weight loss goals. Many of the people I worked with had been on numerous diets, felt shame about their bodies and were in a love-hate relationship with food.  While I dug deeper into the Intuitive Eating and non-diet research through courses, conferences, seminars etc I learned that these approaches are effective. Scientifically, Intuitive Eating has been associated with less disordered eating, a more positive body image, and greater emotional functioning among other benefits. Click here to see these studies. I have now wholeheartedly embraced this approach personally and in my practice.

Are you ready to get off the diet roller coaster?

Are you tired of dieting and ready to start moving towards food peace?

I continue to learn and absorb from many sources – my clients and colleagues; professional development conferences; my own family, where both my husband and son have significant food allergies that have radically challenged our eating habits. As a Mom of two, I understand the dynamics and challenges of feeding a family.

My most important lessons in life have been learned through working with clients, life experience, travel, and raising a family but here are some of my official credentials:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science, Hons. Nutrition & Food Ryerson University, 2008
  • Dietetic Internship, Grand River Hospital 2009
  • Bachelor of Arts, Social Development Studies, University of Waterloo, 1999
  • Various courses in Health At Every Size®, Eating Disorders, Intuitive Eating, Food Allergies, FODMAP's & more

If you are looking for someone who can provide you with compassionate care and support to heal your relationship with food then you've come to the right place. I offer 15-minute free initial phone consultations!

Non-Diet

Approach

The non-diet approach encourages you to view your health through the lens of self-compassion. With eating, it is about moving away from restrictive rules to a place of flexibility and curiosity..... from counting calories to satisfaction and satiation. It is about focusing on setting goals for yourself related to what you want to be able to do in your life on a day by day basis, instead of a number on a scale. Maybe you would like to feel more energized when you wake up in the morning, or walk up the stairs without feeling breathless or play basketball longer with your kids? Maybe you would like to sleep better or feel less bloated? These examples are non-weight related health goals that will make life more enjoyable.

There are many factors that determine health, weight is not the only one, nor one that you can control. We all have a genetically pre-determined set-point weight, which is unfortunately not articulated or respected in media, our society or many health messages. Fighting our set-point weight through dieting is unenjoyable for most, and can lead one to the relentless diet cycle of restriction, over-eating and stopping self-care altogether.  Studies demonstrate that over 85% of people who lose weight on diets regain that weight and more within 3 years.

The non-diet approach is about working towards respecting what your body can do, rather than shaming it. It entails gentle nutrition, joyful movement and creating more memorable moments. I have been a non-diet Dietitian for over 7 years, it is my passion and in my opinion, the best way to approach health. If you are curious about this approach I welcome you to connect with me.
